Our simple Part Q breakdown for installers & fabricators

Part Q of the Building Regulations approved documents refers to the security of a dwelling. Coming into effect in October 2015 in England and Wales, Part Q requires all new build properties and alterations to existing buildings to meet Part Q security standards. This includes that all new windows and doors must provide reasonable protection against any attempts at forced entry. Replacement windows and doors do not need to meet Part Q standards.

How do windows and doors achieve Part Q compliance?

To achieve Part Q compliance, all new windows and doors must satisfy a selection of performance criteria. They must be capable of demonstrating proven security performance, be constructed in a strong and robust way, and use security approved hardware. Installers and fabricators will have to produce evidence of Part Q compliance which can be one of the following:

  • Third party certification of compliance
  • Test evidence for each individual unit
  • Proof of compliance with Part Q Appendix B (If a window or door has any bespoke components or non-standard design, it must be re-tested in line with Appendix B)

Proving Part Q compliance is essential for any building project where planning permission is required. As mentioned above, Part Q does not apply to replacement windows and doors.

Part Q regulations for aluminium windows and doors

As with all other window and door materials, aluminium windows and doors are subject to the same Part Q criteria. At exlabesa, we place great emphasis on ensuring that all our products meet the necessary accreditation in terms of security standards. Many of our aluminium systems have been tested and achieved PAS 24 security accreditation. This means that the system has been designed to resist forced entry and has been tested in real-life break-in scenarios.

With regards to Part Q standards, all exlabesa aluminium systems have undergone rigorous testing to ensure that they meet the criteria for Part Q compliance.
